Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Program

Leader Presence& Military Bearing

They read you before they hear you. This block is about what they read — and how to control it.

What this is

A complete, drill-ready block of instruction on the leader attribute of Presence — taught as a readiness issue rather than a customs-and-courtesies issue. A Soldier who doubts you pauses to evaluate the order before executing it. In garrison that is friction. In contact it is casualties.

Everything needed to teach it is here and nothing else is required: run the deck from a laptop, hand out the field guide, and the roster, risk assessment, and AAR are already built to close out the training record. It is written for an NCO who has a drill weekend and a projector, not a schoolhouse.

What a Soldier walks out with

  1. Locate Presence within the Army Leadership Requirements Model.
  2. Define the four components of Presence.
  3. Describe how bearing is projected — and how it is read.
  4. Apply current appearance standards as a leadership tool, not a gotcha.
  5. Identify counterproductive behaviors that erode presence.
  6. Commit to three actions before next drill.

Appearance standards changed in 2025 and are still being folded into AR 670-1. Check the Citation Card against armypubs.army.mil before you teach the uniform block — verifying a standard you are about to enforce is the same discipline this class is teaching.
