How to print each one

Ink saver is on by default

The deck and the pocket book open in ink-saver mode: line art on white, no solid fills, no block-colour cover. It is roughly a quarter of the toner of the full-colour version and it will not soak or buckle the paper. Colour coding switches to line weight and dash pattern, so everything still reads on a black-and-white copier. Use the Full colour toggle in the toolbar if you ever want the screen version.

ProductPrint settings
Pocket Field GuideThe booklet. Paper Letter, 2 pages per sheet, double-sided, flip on the SHORT edge, scale 100%. 28 pages = 7 sheets per book. Fold down the middle and staple twice on the crease.
Facilitator DeckLetter, landscape, scale 100%. One slide per page with your notes underneath. Print single-sided if you want to lay slides out while you rehearse.
Roster / Risk / AARLetter, portrait, scale 100%.
EverythingScale 100% — never "fit to page," which shrinks the form fields and the diagram labels. In ink-saver you can leave Background graphics OFF, which saves more toner still.

Making it an actual booklet

  1. Save the pocket book as a PDF first.Open 02-pocket-book.html, leave it in ink-saver, click Print / Save PDF, choose "Save as PDF" at Letter size, 2 pages per sheet, scale 100%. Now you have one file you can hand to anybody.
  2. If your copier has a booklet finisher, use it instead.Print the PDF at 5.5 × 8.5 in and pick Booklet or Saddle-stitch in the finishing options. The copier reorders the pages for folding and staples the spine for you. This is the best-looking result by a wide margin.
  3. Paper weight matters more than you think.Standard 20 lb copy paper is fine but floppy in a cargo pocket. 28 lb or 32 lb costs a little more and holds up for months. A sheet of 65 lb cardstock for the cover makes it survive a whole drill year.
  4. Laser beats inkjet here.Laser toner does not run when the book gets damp. If you only have an inkjet, ink-saver mode is doing most of the work for you already.

Where to print

OptionNotes
Your unit’s copierTry this first. This is official training material for an NCODP — it is a legitimate use of unit resources. Ask your training NCO or the S-1 shop. Most unit MFPs are Ricoh, Canon or Xerox and already have a saddle-stitch booklet option built in. Cost to you: nothing.
Post / installation print plantMany installations have a DA print facility or a training support center that does bulk duplication for training products on a work order. Slowest option, cheapest per copy at volume, best finishing.
Staples / Office DepotUpload the PDF online and pick it up, or walk in. Black-and-white booklet printing is generally in the ballpark of a few dollars a copy at these page counts. Ask specifically for saddle-stitch booklet, 8.5 × 11 folded to 5.5 × 8.5.
FedEx Office / UPS StoreSame service, usually a bit more expensive, but open late and often on Sundays — useful the night before drill.
Public libraryCheapest per page anywhere, often around a dime a sheet for black and white. No booklet folding, so you print 2-up double-sided and fold by hand.

What to tell the print counter: "I need this PDF printed as a saddle-stitch booklet — 8.5 by 11 folded to 5.5 by 8.5, black and white, double-sided, 28 pages, and I need N copies." Bring the page count and the copy count and the conversation takes thirty seconds.

Run sheet — what to do before drill

  1. Verify the perishable content.Open the Citation Card and check armypubs.army.mil. Appearance standards changed in 2025 and are still being folded into AR 670-1 — confirm nothing has superseded AD 2025-18 before you teach slides 25–32.
  2. Walk the classroom.Find the AED, the exits, and the latrines for real. Fill those blanks into slide 02. Briefing a hazard you haven't verified is the exact failure this block is about.
  3. Complete and route the risk assessment.Add any site-specific hazards, then get the risk decision authority's signature per your unit SOP.
  4. Print and collate. One pocket book and one AAR form per attendee. One roster, one risk assessment, one deck for you.
  5. Rehearse the first four minutes.Slides 01 through 04 set whether the room is with you. Deliver them standing still, without notes.
  6. Afterward — consolidate the AARs within 72 hours. Then open the next NCODP by naming one change you made because of them.

A note on the citations

Quotations from Army Directive 2025-18 were taken directly from the signed directive. The Leadership Requirements Model was checked against Center for Army Leadership material. Definitions from ADP 6-22, FM 6-22, and TC 7-22.7 are accurate doctrine but are cited to the publication or chapter rather than to a paragraph number, because the source PDFs could not be retrieved to confirm paragraph-level references.

No paragraph number appears anywhere in these products that was not verified against the source. If you need paragraph-level citations for a formal lesson plan, pull the publications from armypubs.army.mil and add them — the Citation Card lists exactly which ones need it.

On the figures. The uniform plates are reproduced from DA PAM 670-1 (26 January 2021), a US Government work approved for public release. Note the date — it predates the 2025 grooming changes, so it is used for insignia placement only. The hair, tattoo-zone and inspection-sweep diagrams are original drawings built from the measurements in AD 2025-18 and AD 2022-09, because no current official figure reflects those changes.
